1. Repression in Guinea: another puppet in power in an African country
2. Elections in Germany: right turn to the Deutschland
3. Walmart in the upcoming anniversary of the barcode we review the evolution of this giant
4. The army and the environment: why pacifists and environmentalists should combine their efforts
5. The myth of overpopulation: it is not the many poor who pollute the planet, but the small gang of rich
GUINEA
Guinean opposition demanded yesterday the "departure of the junta leader," Captain Camara, as a precondition for any discussion. Forum
forces of Guinea - the opposition parties, trade unions, the company civil - also demanded the dissolution
National Council for Democracy and Development - junta -
and the establishment of a transitional body which will appoint a government of national unity
A week after a demonstration repressed in blood, Guinea has had its dead.
Over 150 people were killed last Monday in Conakry, when security forces dispersed thousands of opponents of the ruling military junta.
Captain Camara promised peace and stability when he seized power in the death of President Lansana Conte in December 2008.
The security forces fired on the crowd to disperse a demonstration by opponents who had gathered at a stadium in Conakry, to protest against a possible candidacy in the presidential election of the head of the junta.
Camara had however assured his fellow citizens and the international community, he would not seek the post of president.
But lately, there is more mystery about his willingness to stand for election in January 2010.
The UN, U.S. and France strongly condemned violence and continue to push for the leader of the coup leaders to adhere to its commitment not to run for president.
Yet the stage where the massacre took place was named for the day when Guinea gained its independence from France, September 28, 1958
So officials of the carnage of that day are named Captain Black Camara,
junta leader and President of the Republic proclaimed,
Captain Tiegboro Camara Secretary of State for the fight against drugs and organized crime,
General Konate Defense Minister, Jean Claude
Pivi minister in charge of presidential security.
Again, the African Union and ECOWAS and the international partners were without effect before an officer coup ready to walk over corpses to stay in power.
Camara is incompetent for the position.
He simply work for three months after taking power:
he fought against corruption, he retired the old generals loyal to President Conte and he attacked the drug trade.
But after this period, he began to feel comfortable in the chair as president.
In addition to the senseless killings of demonstrators on Monday, witnesses are part of the web savage rape
soldiers trying to hide the massacre by flying bodies to morgues for burial elsewhere quickly
Camara course in an official statement denying any responsibility, instead accusing the opposition and the soldiers who committed acts independently of him
His latest ploy is the unity government National.
The dictator knows that if the opposition agrees to be part of such a government,
the international community would be embarrassed in the application of sanctions.
Guinea has spent the last 50 years under the influence of successive dictators
Guinea is rich in natural resources ... therefore not easy for outside forces to put pressure on the regime to democratize
The proof of the old regime Conte has survived years of suspension of EU aid and never comply with European demands for political reform
ELECTION GERMANY
Have you noticed that there were general elections in Germany?
Probably not a campaign was quite boring ...
after all, the two major parties have worked together in coalition over the past four years and agreed on most issues
But flat or not, the election gave three important results
Angela Merkel of 'Christian Democratic Union remain Chancellor
but she will not have to share power with the Social Democrats, she would share seats with the Liberal Democrat Cabinet
located right party of Merkel
his own party, even if that keeps you ahead of the others, still lost votes ... but this is nothing compared to the social democrats who have dropped 11% ...
its worst result since World War II is 23%
that after eleven years in power has to get used to the seats of the opposition
the electoral disaster is the result of its policies against workers, unemployed and small businesses ... while cutting taxes for the super rich and big business
Yes, the other three major parties have supported these policies
but it was the activist base of the Social Democrats, workers and the unemployed who have been most disappointed in that direction
those frustrated voters fell in love with the smile of Westerwelle Liberal Democrats ... a party that has not been in power for decades
otherwise, many abstained or were voting for the Left, a party that is gaining importance in West Germany, from 8.7 % in 2005 to 12% nationally this time
increasing the number of Bundestag deputies sent to the 54 to 80
Greens also Points earned ...
The Left has been almost alone in opposing the military adventure in Afghanistan Germany
other major parties voted to send troops there even though a majority of Germans opposed
The left was only to oppose raising the age to receive pensions from 65 to 67 at a time when elderly people above 50 years can get a job
So the new coalition government will move to the right
pushing for drastic measures that will further hurt the workers, all but the richest will their living standards fall accordingly
At least some good news finally: the neo-Nazi, who had seats in the legislature of Brandenburg has now lost, receiving only 1% of the vote.
WALMART IS EVIL
Today marks the 39th anniversary of the barcode, created in 1970 by George Laurer.
And one of the first companies to develop and use the barcode on a large scale is probably Wal-Mart's success
giant Wal-Mart are somewhat paradoxical enough
the biggest company in the world, and one of more sophisticated side of technology
The company emerged from remote and poor areas of Arkansas
increasingly global in its purchases and sales, Wal-Mart has a very homogeneous racially based
The company plays a lot on family values is based in a region with the highest divorce rates in the U.S.
Follow the evolution of Wal-Mart gives a good overview of the political and economic trajectory of U.S.
Wal-Mart has caused a revolution in the field sales
But also culturally, Wal-Mart has put forward a patriarchal system, but customer-oriented, and a corporate culture that borders on religious
This gave the advantage to this company that took advantage of the growing inequality and the rise of the Republican right
Much of the innovation and success of Wal-Mart has its pursuit of these ideas and benefits from its large size
The company has primarily been a very successful distribution company with its unparalleled management information has been copied elsewhere
The Walton family was able to take a advantage in the market for the sale by keeping wages low and unions by eliminating
while seeking to win the loyalty and affection Employees ... using the population of firms to own Christian conservatives
The Walton family has used the model of farm families, especially with women and men to sales management
Wal-Mart has recruited many of its managers Christian universities, young people from schools of thought kind of God and the free market
A culture where there is more trust in God and Wal-Mart to address the problems of everyday life that governments and unions
But do not forget that Wal-Mart owes its success to the items it sells cheap
but it would not become as huge if inequality had not grown as quickly
or if the Conservatives had not made much effort to demonize the government
But the dominance of Wal-Mart will not last forever, it was noted that the fall of General Motors to be convinced
WAR AND ENVIRONMENT
Considering the huge pollution caused by war
Peace could be the only way to counteract changes Climate
Yet, few environmentalists seem to recognize the impact of war on the ecological crisis
And few peace activists about the ecological consequences of the war
Never movements for peace and ecology have been so many goals in common
The war devastates ecosystems with radiation, and waste oil and use
destructive of resources that are otherwise necessary for companies
Even if every person, every car, every company and even ceased to emit GHGs
The Earth is heading straight toward disaster for a major reason: the military produces enough GHG, alone, to put us all in danger of extinction
The activists peace and ecology for a long already know that the war in Iraq was launched as oil
A war to continue the model of endless growth in a finite world
Climate change is the result of consumption and waste that exceed the capacity of the Earth Biophysics
can say the same about the war ...
War is a tool to maintain the current economic model, serving the rich and powerful for as long as possible
The sooner we put an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, month changes climate will affect future generations
We tend to consider the consequences of war affects only troops and civilians located in areas where war takes place
but the reality is that the devastation of war remains overall
Pacifists should learn more about ecology and ecologists must learn about the consequences of war
So there is a great opportunity to double the effects of both camps by acting jointly
Any movement which seeks to find solutions to the challenges of war and destruction Ecological must join forces in peace and environmental protection
CANADIAN FORCES ARMY
Reduce the size of the Canadian military should be a priority for those who want a more peaceful world
It should also be a priority for anyone concerned about the environment
Produce tanks and jets consume a significant amount of energy and causes a lot of waste and pollution
Once built, these aircraft, tanks and warship burning of vast quantities oil, even if rarely used outside the golf practice
For these reasons, the National Department of Defense releases more greenhouse gases than any other federal government agency
The Canadian submarine can throw dirty water in the ocean
naval frigates can outright use the ocean as a dumping ground
Even after the end of their operations the ships continue to pollute the ocean
everywhere across Canada ecosystems have been damaged by military training
There are over 92 funds lake where the shells lie still dangerous
For nearly 50 years, the army to bomb the Lac St-Pierre near Trois-Rivieres, with shells as large as 155 millimeters, about the size of a log
Over 300 000 projectiles were tested in Lake St. Pierre ... an estimated 5000 still dangerous shells lying in the bottom of the lake
First nations have suffered more than other adverse effects in the environment of the Canadian army
Under the War Measures Act land belonging to First Nations have too often been seized and destroyed by the army
It goes without saying that the impact of the Canadian army on the environment has not often been under investigation or subject to criticism
And there with the impressive expansion of military spending under the Liberals and Conservatives in Ottawa, the risks rise even more to see Canada as permanent war
This is pretty bad in itself ... it's even worse when you consider the damage that military inflict on the environment
RESOURCES AND CLASS
A big myth that runs on climate change is that the population explosion is the main cause
When indeed it is not the population's consumption, not the masses of poor, but rather the rich
In fact the reality is that the places where the population has increased most rapidly is where GHG emissions grew the most slowly
and vice versa
between 1980 and 2005, for example, the population of Sub-Sahara has contributed to 18.5% of the world's population growth, but only to 2.4% CO2
The North America is 4% people more in the same period, but 14% of carbon dioxide emission
63% of the population growth has occurred in places where emissions are very low
In Indeed, one sixth of the world population is so poor that it produces no CO2 at all
And plus, when the poor regions of the world produce greenhouse gases that comes more often than businesses in western that are operating locally
Even deforestation in poor countries is driven mainly by operations to deliver wood, meat and other products from rich countries
So far there is a weak correlation between global warming and population growth, the cause and effect is evident between the rich and warming
One need only look the side of luxury items like a yacht in ten minutes does more damage to the biosphere that most Africans will make a lifetime
it is not surprising that the old rich expect much on monitoring Human Reproduction ... because during that time they were left alone
But we still have not seen a well-organized campaign where we are tackling the environmental impacts of the very rich
is expected to transition in the demographic curve with the total population to 10 billion stopping
But nobody anticipates a transition consumption
Our business model requires constant growth so we will use Earth's resources to accelerate until the biosphere reacts aggressively
So where are the protest movements that the rich are destroying the ecological systems that keep us alive ?
